On 26th June I was astounded to learn that the pay sheets were made out as usual, i.e. at the monthly rate of $208.33 of $300 and arrears from 12 January instead, and at once wrote to the Hon. H. E. Wodehouse, Acting Colonial Treasurer, pointing this out; the matter was by him referred to the Auditor General who replied that the Estimates were framed with reference to Mr. Hooper - my predecessor - and implied that the larger amount stated by Mr. Lister to be due to me would not be paid.
On 30th June I went to see Mr. Lister, who is on sick leave; he was astonished that any exception had been taken to the question of my right to the money, and directed me to inform the Hon. Acting Colonial Treasurer that the Estimates were not framed with respect to Mr. Hooper - who had left the service six months before - but in regard to myself. He again detailed the reasons and circumstances of the alteration which I have fully mentioned at paragraph 2 and that the money would be paid again.
